Esthetic Crown Lengthening
Patients with excess gum tissue often complain of a “gummy” smile or “short” teeth. However, there are several more serious health issues that need to be addressed in addition to these concerns. Excess gum tissue makes it easier for periodontal pockets to form which increases that chance that you will develop gum infections or disease. This is why patients are encouraged to contact Piedmont Periodontics in Warrenton, VA and discuss the possibility of an esthetic crown lengthening procedure.
What is esthetic crown lengthening?
Esthetic crown lengthening is a fairly simple procedure that involves removing excess tissue as well as a slight reshaping of the jaw bone (if needed). The procedure, depending on the number of teeth involved, usually takes approximately an hour to complete. Essentially, Dr. Hirshman will remove any excess gum tissue and bone before reshaping the jaw to expose more tooth surface. Often, esthetic crown lengthening is performed on multiple adjacent teeth. It can, however, be performed on a single tooth if necessary.
What are the benefits of esthetic crown lengthening?
In addition to giving a more attractive smile, esthetic crown lengthening offers several health benefits as well. Removing excess gum tissue can help prevent the occurrence of gum disease or at least make it more manageable. It also helps to reduce pocket depth within the gum tissue and therefor, the incidence of food or bacteria becoming trapped below the gum line.
How does it work?
Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Hirshman will administer a local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort that might occur. Then, a few small incisions will be made along the gum line to separate the tissue from the teeth. It may then be necessary to remove a small amount of bone to create a natural look and to prevent gum tissue regrowth. Once the procedure is finished, Dr. Hirshman will suture the area and apply bandages to encourage reattachment of the tissue to the teeth. After one week, you will be asked to come in for a follow up appointment so that we may remove sutures (if needed) and check to ensure the area is healing properly.
You no longer need to be concerned with the appearance of a “gummy smile.” To learn more about esthetic crown lengthening, contact Dr. Hirshman in Warrenton, VA to schedule your consultation today!
